Fishing season is in full force right now.
Update 7/16/07:
The fishing is still awesome! But, then again, when isn't it? The summer has been very hot and dry. This has caused the waters to drop quickly. Fortunately the Taylor River has had good flows which has kept the Gunnison at a great level. Some of the creeks are starting to get low and clear. This is making the fish spooky and a little tougher on those sunny afternoons. The gunnison is still fishing great. The fish have been eating caddis better than ever. I am thinking it is getting close to hopper season as well. There are alot of large rainbows feeding and we landed more rainbows than browns yesterday and also got the grand slam with a few cutthroat in the mix. There are a few Drakes around, mostly on the upper waters, also PMD's and caddis. This year has also shown a good hatch of yellow sallies.
The flies I suggest are my Foam Natural Drake in #8 and #10 for the green drake or #12 for the gray drake. Swisher's dancing caddis, olive body elk caddis, and my fluttering caddis are working well for the caddis. A BDE in rust or cream size #14 is a great fly for the PMD. With this pattern you don't have to match the insect's color to get the fish to eat. They take it because of the way the fly rides in the water with its natural translucency. For nymphs use Trina's Bubbleback pheasant tail. Also try Montana Fly's Sparkle back Pheasant tail in #14, it has been my number one producer.
Hope you have some luck out there and drop me a not if you have any questions.
Here are some shots of the salmonfly hatch. --Ben
